This 1923 work marked a defining moment in musical history. The work sets poems by Edith Sitwell to music by William Walton — both iconic, adventurous artists — with the poems read in rhythm to the music. Virginia Arts Festival’s production of this rarely-heard work features gifted instrumentalists conducted by JoAnn Falletta, and a cast of “reciters” including the “agile, radiant” (The New York Times) soprano Hila Plitmann; bass-baritone Kevin Deas, whose “compelling delivery” rings “with drama and conviction” (The Morning Call); and the host of NPR’s Performance Today, Fred Childs. “Redolent of the Jazz Age and Dada and coloured with a devil-may-care insouciance…it has an inventive charm and vivacity that proves it is more than a period piece” (The Telegraph, UK).
