Transportation - Trolleys, Buses and Cabs in Virginia Beach

Once you are in Virginia Beach, you will find all the major car rental agencies, limousine services, buses, taxis, trolleys and convention shuttle services to accommodate your every need. By far, the most convenient way to get from place to place at the oceanfront if you do not have your own car is on our trolleys and electric hybrid mini buses.

Ride “The Wave”

“The Wave” is what we call our Trolley and Shuttle system in Virginia Beach.  We may sometimes generically refer to it all as a “shuttle system” so don’t be confused by the terms.  It’s all a part of the same Hampton Roads Transit System (HRT).

Depending on the route that you are taking you will either ride a Trolley or a Shuttle (mini-bus) .

The Trolleys are only located at the oceanfront on Atlantic Avenue. You will feel like you’ve stepped right in the 1950s. Riding this little slice of nostalgia is a fun and inexpensive way to sightsee and make your way around the beach area. Kids will love to ride on The WaveTrolleys just for the fun of it! Super reasonable fares!

Shuttles and mini-buses are used for the other non-oceanfront routes.

The HRT (Hampton Roads Transit), which runs the Wave, also operates the Paddlewheel Ferry, another slice of nostalgia, which takes you from Portsmouth to Norfolk and back. For more information on the Paddlewheel Ferry, as well as tours of the Norfolk Naval Station, go to

Virginia-Beach-Taxi Cabs are also abundant in Virginia Beach.  It’s not like New York city with a cab passing by every few minutes.  Usually you will have to call a local cab company to meet you at a location and at a specified time in order to have them take you to your destination. Since the oceanfront is only 40 blocks long, if you have the energy (and the time) you can usually get to where you need to go by foot.  However, if you want to explore further inland, definitely hail a cab and they will take you anywhere you want to go at a very reasonable price!

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) provided over 18 million passenger trips in FY15 to people in Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Have a question about our service, or need assistance reading maps and schedules, contact HRT Customer Relations at (757) 222-6100.

A Typical Virginia Beach HRT Bus

Planning your trip — three methods

  1. Let Google plan your trip online. At, click on “Trip Planner” and fill in your starting and ending place.
  2. Plan your own trip online — If you already know which route(s) you will ride. At, click “Routes”.
  3. Pick up route maps in the lobby of HRT offices in Norfolk or Hampton; each one shows the route and the times the bus reaches key points.

Paying for your ride

  • If you are going to pay as you ride, have ready $1.75 (in correct change) every time you board.
  • If you’ll ride more than twice on one day, it’s cheaper to buy a Go-1-Day Pass for $4.00. On your first ride of the day, buy your card from the machine (on the bus or the ferry or the light rail platform). Be sure to have correct change.
  • If you have a valid Pass (Go-1-Day or Go-30-Day or Go-365), be ready to use it every time you board the bus, ferry or light rail.

* Persons with disabilities or Medicare cardholders pay less for any fare or pass.  Youth may also pay less than full fare on certain services.  Have an ID ready, and ask before you pay. *

What you can do on the bus

  • Use your cell phone — chat quietly, send messages, check the weather or the bus schedules…
  • Read – the paper, a book, a magazine…
  • Talk to other passengers — broaden your horizons…
  • Watch the scenery
  • Sleep

(Note: Eating and drinking are not allowed.)

If you are not sure what to do next, or if you need advice about ferries, light rail, buses, or MAX express buses

  • Ask the drivers – they know quite a bit about the system
