Carmit Bachar to Host Operation Smile Spring Gala on May 5 at Lesner Inn; Decker Family, Tina Brehon to Be Honored

This spring, the shores of the Lynnhaven River will host the Operation Smile Spring Gala, led by global performer and advocate Carmit Bachar takes the stage to host the Operation Smile Spring Gala. On Tuesday, May 5, supporters will gather at Lesner Inn for a floral-attire evening, celebrating the organization’s local roots and global commitment to bring care closer to home and the hope that access to surgery makes possible for children and families around the world.
The evening will include a red carpet welcome, sunset cocktails, a formal dinner, silent and live auctions, and live performances, including a visit from Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton.

The Spring Gala serves as a cornerstone for Operation Smile’s “We Build Hope” campaign and its ambitious Operation 100 initiative: investing in training frontline health workers and strengthening district hospitals, ensuring that geographic and financial barriers no longer stand between a child and a healthy, functional smile.

As a longtime Operation Smile ambassador and performer, Carmit Bachar brings a deeply personal perspective to the evening. Born with a cleft lip and palate, Carmit has used her platform as a member of the Pussycat Dolls and a solo performer to champion children born with similar conditions.

“Being born with a cleft lip and palate shaped my journey in ways I never expected, but it also taught me that a smile is more than just a physical transformation, it’s the beginning of a new life,” said Bachar. “I am so honored to host this gala in Virginia Beach, the very place where this movement began. Together, we are showing the world that when we build hope, we give every child the chance to live their life out loud.”

The heart of the evening will be the recognition of true local heroes.

The evening will also recognize local leaders. The Pete Decker Family will receive the Legacy of Hope Award for decades of support, and Tina Brehon will receive the Cotto Changemaker Award for her work leading the Sewcial Project, which provides handmade smile bags and hospital gowns for patients.

Byrdie Wilson, a rising Nashville country artist born with a cleft palate, is transforming her journey of resilience into music, advocating for Operation Smile. Known for her energetic performances as Byrdie & The Bees and her 2023 hit “Broadway,” she shares her inspiring story of overcoming surgeries to shine in the music industry.

The event will also feature live music from Soul Intent, a Virginia-based band known for Motown, R&B and contemporary hits.
