NEW EXHIBIT ALERT- Stephen Harrington established his business, Coastal Guardians, in 1994 for the sole purpose of presenting our nation’s lighthouses from an historic perspective. Each light is visited, photographed, and researched for historical accuracy. Working in cooperation with the light’s historian/director, a time period reflecting the lighthouse’s peak operation is selected, and the details are refined to present a rendition that is as historically accurate as possible. Each print he sells is accompanied by a one or two page history. Nine of his original water colors are on display at The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum 1113 Atlantic Ave, Stephen resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Free Admission to Museum and Gift Shop. Checkout the oldest view on the oceanfront at the historic de Witt Cottage (circa 1895).
Happy 4th of July. The oceanfront fireworks have been cancelled, but the doors to the oldest historic beach cottage are open. Come by and see our new exhibits and browse through our beautiful gift shop. Always free admission. Open 10-5 pm. Limited on-site parking. Experience “old beach” at the VB oceanfront.

June 6, 1944 was the beginning of the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulting in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Code named Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. (source - The History Channel) As with all most males during this time, the 3 de Witt sons (Peter, Paul and Cornelius) participated in some aspect of the war. Specifically, Peter de Witt was a World War II hero. He was a second lieutenant with the 695th Armored Artillery and landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and went into Germany with the 3rd Army. Attached is the ROTC Uniform of his brother Paul. We recognize all the mothers, fathers and siblings who had sons, brothers and sisters who went off to support the US and Allied war effort during WWII and continue to do so today.
Although the weekend has passed, we would like to recognize Memorial Day and honor the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. To recognize these special individuals, our resident carver, Ed Morrison of East Virginia Decoys carved these beautiful wooden statues representing our 5 military branches. Thank you Ed for sharing your works of art.
