We have a multi-dwelling unit and after several years of wear and tear (and a variety of sketchy inhabitants) we decided that it was time to revitalize the units and give them a new fresh appeal… starting with the smell.

Some of the units had pet odors and some of the units even had lingering cigarette odor.  Yuck. It was a daunting task.  We had already tried masking the smells with various disinfectant sprays, candles, and air fresheners,  but the underlying smells remained and always came back.  We weren’t sure if the rooms could ever get back to their original “smell state”.

We decided on the Estate 4000 ozone generator to eliminate all of the odors and start fresh.

Estate 4000 Ozone Generator

This corded electrical Estate 4000 ozone generator from www.odorfree.com offers an impressive output of 2,800 mg/hr that can sufficiently deodorize any space from smoke, pet odor, and other undesirable scents. You can safely use it weekly to keep a healthy environment at your home or a single room.  We found that this generator can be used in cars, basements, pet stores, kitchens and can effectively remove odor from smoking areas, restrooms, and other such spaces. It destroys the source of odor rather than masking it or covering it up temporarily and uses ozone as quite a powerful deodorizing agent. It is advertised to remove leftover odors from pets, cooking, smoke, or other smells considered as “musty”.

We gave it a try in our units and the result was more than satisfactory. The operation is super easy, all you have to do is turn the timer knob on and set it from 1 to 12 hours.  Our units needed approximately 2-3 hours of service to get them odor free.  Some of the larger units needed more time, but none of them required the full 12 hour timer.  We also set the Ozone output to “Medium” for the first round just to see how it would do.

After each room was complete, we would go in and air out each unit to get rid of the ozone smell.  NOTE: The ozone smell isn’t bad, but it is definitely detectable and probably isn’t desirable to maintain in the space.  It has a sort of “plasticky” sort of smell and although it wasn’t nearly as bad as the musty, nasty odors in some of the rooms, it isn’t an odor that you want lingering around.   All we have to do was air our the spaces for about an hour to get rid of the ozone small and when we came back in, the rooms smelled completely neutral.  No lingering odors or bad scents were detectable in any of the units.

Now we have only had the Estate 4000 Ozone Generator for approximately 1 month, but so far is has done everything that we had expected it to do.  We no longer need to spend money on costly air fresheners, deodorizing powders and granules that don’t work.  We simply bring the Estate 4000 into the room and set it for the approximate time and ozone output and walk away.  When we come back, we can move the ozone generator to a different unit while we quickly air out the first unit and keep the process going until all units are done.  It’s simple and effortless… and it works!

For large spaces (over 4000 sq feet), you can set the timer to the maximum and also the ozone output to the maximum.  According to the manual, it can deodorize a 4500 square foot space in as little as 10 hours.  Just remember, that you’ll have to leave the room until the ozone generation ends and all the residual settles.  Moving the generatror closer tot he source of the smell seems to help a little but still isn’t completely necessary.  It will deodorize the room completely no matter where the generator is located.

Some of the benefits that we have immediately noticed:

  • It takes care of “new” smells (even good ones) along with other older “musty” ones
  • It helps get rid of mold and mildew in damp environemnts
  • It purifies the air of allergens
