Virginia Beach attracts thousands of people with its sunlit beaches and spectacular marine scenery. However, there is a large percentage of visitors who prefer this beach for outdoor adventure and activities. They find it a great pleasure to try a variety of options in this stunning natural area since this beach space has over 4,000 acres of coast and forest in total.

You get access not only to the waterfront and beach activities but also to an opportunity to admire the wildlife of national refuges, the beauty and serenity of city parks, and other exclusive destinations! So what exactly outdoor recreation activities can you try in Virginia Beach?

Outdoor Sports and Activities

The coastal area is perfect for individual and team sports thanks to the fresh air, plenty of open space, and lots of potential participants. You can have an early jog, a fun run, or a gentle stroll according to your mood. Virginia Beach is often chosen for sand soccer, badminton, and beach volleyball. Though some people are more likely to enjoy sports by analyzing badminton betting odds and placing wagers, many locals come out and enjoy badminton on the soft sands of the beach.

Virginia Beach provides dedicated indoor and outdoor courts for players of tennis and pickleball, as well as other professional athletes. There are several golf courses for connoisseurs of this activity, too.

Water Sports

It isn’t a secret that a spacious beach offers a great selection of water activities. There are several bodies of water, including the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, the Back Bay, and the Lynnhaven River, so you can enjoy sports all year round. There are many interesting options to choose from:

  • Surfing and swimming
  • Jet-skiing, parasailing, and similar sailing activities
  • Kayaking, paddleboarding, and other rowing activities
  • Admiring hundreds of species of birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals

Hiking and Biking

There are several destinations you can use for hiking and biking in Virginia Beach. The most popular one is First Landing State Park, with Cape Henry marking spot and over 20 miles of trails covering swamps, dunes, and forests. You can find boardwalk sections like the Bald Cypress or discover hidden-from-other-eyes trails with exceptional scenery.

There are 9 trails running through 7 different ecosystems, 15 hiking and biking routes, as well as over 300 bird species to admire. When it comes to biking, you can find over 100 miles of greenery-filled paths and a 3-mile Oceanfront Boardwalk that welcomes cyclists in particular.

Ziplining

The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium offers an adrenaline-fueled outdoor activity with aerial ropes courses and ziplines. You can feel the pleasure of gliding, swinging, and moving along treetop bridges depending on your choice at a height of 150 feet. Those who decide to try Adventureworks will get access to 9 ziplines, up to 1,000 feet long, overlooking more than 60 acres of maritime forest and ocean.

Treasure Hunting

If you own a metal detector or can rent one for personal use, you should try treasure hunting on the quiet stretch of the shoreline. This is a more relaxed approach, though with a high level of thrill; first, check local regulations before setting off.

Fishing

Virginia Beach is often called the Rockfish Capital of the World, offering freshwater, brackish, and saltwater fishing possibilities. There are dozens of fish species, including trout, flounder, cobia, tuna, mahi-mahi, and many more. You can launch a boat to check different ramp locations or even hire a private charter if you need assistance. It is possible to stay on land and cast lines from a variety of popular pier fishing spots.

Star Gazing

One more quiet, romantic, and family-friendly activity to do in Virginia Beach is admiring the beauty of this space. You can pitch a tent or access one of the family-friendly playgrounds to listen to the waves, splashes, and local inhabitants, look at the stars, and feel the gentle breeze of salty air.

Horseback Riding

From October to May, there is a period when Virginia Beach visitors can enjoy an additional exciting activity, such as horse riding. They can ride horses down the scenic shorelines and greenery-filled trails. It can be both a romantic trip for a couple or a family activity in colder seasons.

You can see that Virginia Beach offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities for any taste, budget, and time of year. It is a perfect place to find a hobby or try new activities and add more pleasant moments to your everyday life.
