How to Visit Virginia Beach with Diabetes

With 35 miles of coastline and a vibrant creative district, Virginia Beach is the perfect place for your next vacation. But if you have to manage diabetes, you’ll need to be a little more attentive to your health as you plan your trip. Fortunately, a health issue doesn’t have to derail your plans for a good time.

Read on to learn how you can visit Virginia Beach with diabetes.

Make a Packing Checklist

Don’t hit the road until you’ve taken time to map out a packing checklist. You don’t want to be without essential supplies related to your condition. Plan on packing a glucose meter, insulin, and any oral medications you take. Take documentation related to your prescriptions, too, in case you need medical care. Have a travel tote packed with healthy snacks and glucose tablets. Don’t forget a first-aid kit with basic bandages and hypoglycemia treatments. And make sure you have reminders for medications or testing on your phone. When you’re traveling, it’s easy to get off schedule or forget your normal routine.

Protect Your Medications

In the summer months, Virginia Beach temperatures can crank above 90 degrees, and that’s not good for insulin. Be mindful of the heat as you transport injectables or other medications. Keep meds in a cooler and avoid direct sunlight. If you head out for some oceanfront dining, don’t leave your medications in the car if the temperatures are high. Similarly, if you head to the beach for some afternoon relaxation, keep your meds in a cooler, and keep that cooler in the shade.

Look for Nearby Pharmacies

Always look for local urgent care clinics, pharmacies, and other medical spaces when you’re in a new place. In Virginia Beach, you’ll find top-notch medical care and plenty of pharmacies on Pacific Avenue. You could need a refill if you lose your prescription or take a longer trip. Look into telehealth care, as well.  If you’re in the WeightWatchers Trulicity Program, for example, you can seek refills and consultations online, so you’re always connected to care, regardless of where you are.

Be Active and Drink Enough Water

Yes, lounging by the beach is a great way to pass the time in Virginia Beach. But make plans to be active, too. Walk along the trails at First Landing State Park, or stroll along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, which stretches for three miles. Walking can keep your blood sugar in check while boosting your energy and overall health. And don’t forget to pack some water for your activities. Hydrate frequently and take breaks so your body has some recovery time. Pace yourself, listen to your body, and make the most of Virginia Beach’s outdoor spaces.

Enjoy Your Stay in Virginia Beach

When you’re proactive about packing and aware of your body’s needs, you can enjoy your time in Virginia Beach when you have diabetes. Create a packing list and take note of the nearest pharmacies and clinics in the area. Take care of your medications in the heat. And drink water throughout the day when you’re active. Ultimately, you can indulge in Virginia Beach’s offerings and feel confident each day.
