Parking and Driving in Virginia Beach

Rules of the Road

If you are driving to Virginia Beach, PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY!

If coming from the north,  you more than likely must pass through either the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT). They are very unique and interesting, but they can cause huge traffic delays.  Maintain your speed and keeps your eyes on the road. Drive on the right side of the highway. Seatbelts are required for all vehicle occupants. Right turn on red after stopping is permitted in Virginia unless otherwise indicated. Children under age 4 or under 40 pounds must be secured in a child restraint or booster seat. State Police monitor the highways entering Virginia Beach and local Virginia Beach Police monitor the local streets.  They have seen every sort of vacationer imaginable and although they can be reasonable, they mean business if you are breaking the law.

Parking Laws

My one piece of advice for people visiting Virginia Beach is… Please do not park illegally!

Read the signs wherever you park. Just because a store is closed doesn’t mean you can park in their lot. Streets are usually well marked and we do have some seasonal metered parking along the oceanfront streets. If you park someplace where you don’t have permission, it is likely that you will be towed. The local government generates a lot of its revenue from parking tickets and the towing companies around here never seem to be hurting for business. Nothing will ruin your vacation quicker than having to spend a bunch of money getting your ride out of car jail.
