About the Band

Category: Band
Music Genre: Jazz, R&B, Reggae, RnB

CULTIVATED MIND is a reggae, dub, and jazz combo from the Hampton Roads area of South Eastern Virginia that has been creating socially - conscious, high-energy, infectious roots and dub music since 2013. Formed by producer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Brand, Cultivated Mind has grown over the years, producing multiple albums, EP's, and collaborations with other East Coast artists and artists in Europe and Jamaica. Current members include Chad "Yadi Rama" Tyler on keys/dubbing, Roschell "Old Man" Diggs on bass/backing vocals, Adam Mack on organ and backing vocals, Rob Martin on drums and percussion, and Christian "Sticky G" Lubertazzi on Tenor Saxophone. The band rotates between an acoustic trio and full band for live performances and can accommodate any size venue. Though mostly playing original music, Cultivated Mind's concerts also often include medleys of old reggae classics, dub versions of classic rock and blues songs, and live improvisations. Cultivated Mind appreciates the constant love and support from our family, friends, and fans (The "Cultivators"), and we hope you take the time to explore and enjoy our discography on Spotify, iTunes, or our youtube channel. And when our coast is cold

So Big up the One Drop General
Waive the red, green, and gold
and never let the banner fold
The only thing delivering truth
is ruff reggae music, rubadub, and the roots

Give I some Bunny Wailer, Dennis or some Gregory
A Little scientist, tubby, Barrington Levy
See it nah matter how you spin it or you dub it

Cultivated Mind

Feeling old age
creeping up in my bones
and all I've got to show
is scars on my soul
I've made enough mistakes
Enough transgressions
and ignored all of my father's blessings
traded it all in
for a life alone

But don't leave me Jah
I'm a rotten soul, so clean me Jah
Open up my heart and free me Jah
So inna Zion I may meet thee Jah

I'm just a hopeless sinner
Born with a heart so bitter
I'm just a crooked son
Always looking for my redemption

But don't leave me Jah
I'm a rotten soul, so clean me Jah
Open up my heart and free me Jah
So inna Zion I may meet thee Jah

Cultivated Mind

I don't go to Sunday school no more
But I love God more than ever
You won't find me sitting on a Sunday Morn
With Hypocrites and Devils
The ones who looked at InI with scorn
and never called me brother
The only thing they're good for
is keeping score
and judging one another.

Mother with your 5 crying youths
they're gonna talk about you
(hear them chatting away)
5 Children and no husband in your pew?
they're gonna talk about you
(hear them chatting away)
Tattered clothes and some worn working boots
they're gonna talk about you
(hear them chatting away)
You could show them kindness
till your face turns blue
and still they're gonna talk about you

No No, No No
I won't be led astray no more

Conquerers and kings,
Hundreds of millions slain
brothers and sisters, all murdered
In Jesus' name
See how the Roman's killed their savior
now the Vatican hides their shame
And Johnny Rebel based his system
on the Mark of Cain
Remember, the bigger the smile
the larger the teeth
so beware of smiling preachers,
for what lies underneath
is a rotten old core,
a greedy disease,
taught to kids on Sunday Morn
to further hypocrisy

No No, No No
I won't be led astray no more

Young man covered in tattoos
they're gonna talk about you
Got a wife of a different hue?
they're gonna talk about you
Never approving of the life you choose
they're gonna talk about you
You came to church to get rid of your blues
and still they're gonna talk about you

That's why I don't go to Sunday school no more
But I love God more than ever
You won't find me sitting on a Sunday Morn
With Hypocrites and Devils
The ones who looked at InI with scorn
and never called me brother
The only thing they're good for
is keeping score
and judging one another.

Where is the love my children?
Why do you rejoice while we suffer so?
If only life was fulfilling
I wouldn't rush quick to end the show

So I use the makeup
to cover tears fallin
Cheer up kid,
no one likes it when you're bawlin'

Yet still my life is an ugly shade of grey
Better to hide in shame
than face my day
But mamma never raised no sucker
better overcome quick
before you get trampled under
Leave your soul backstage
it's time to entertain

So I use the makeup
to cover tears fallin
Cheer up kid,
no one likes it when you're bawlin'

So do your dances
like heathens
round bonfires
breeding contempt
for us clowns who lie bleeding
only retreating
when the liquor's done gone
and the heart of the party stops beating

Where is the love my children?
Why do you rejoice while we suffer so?
If only life was fulfilling
I wouldn't rush quick to end the show

Cultivated Mind

When they take from you
do you turn the other cheek?
or still burn inside,
from those who made you feel weak?
They say, "God's kingdom
Is reserved for the meek,"
So God help my with my pride
when the forked-tongues speak
to stake claims on you,
take credit for your toils
or lay blame on you,
when a situation spoils,
or put shame on you
enough to make your blood boil
But may fire burn the pirates
who would rob me of my Joy

Oh no no
You've never found me
Oversteppin' my boundaries
I've got no time for no oversteppers
A humble man, the way my mamma raised me
I keep a firm head when the world's gone crazy
I've got no time for no oversteppin'

Whatever you do,
they say they do it best
whatever moves you make,
They're clocking your success
you take a tumble,
they bathe in your distress
and stir the pot
to smile at your unrest
But Jah help me overcome these oversteppers
Jah help me overcome these oversteppers
Jah help me overcome these oversteppers
Jah help me overcome these Oversteppers

Oh no no
You've never found me
Oversteppin my boundaries
We've got no time for no Oversteppers.
